“Backstage” is an educational and interactive route to discovering the world of filmmaking.
This route is composed of six halls, five of which are dedicated to cinema’s main elements: direction, screenplay, sound, costume and fiction, while the sixth hall narrates 75 years of Cinecittà.
The Director’s Room Go inside the director’s studio to learn about this important role in the filmmaking process. Books, items and personal effects in the library become beguiling clues to understanding the imagery of famous filmmakers: Federico Fellini, Sergio Leone, Lina Wertmüller, Martin Scorsese, Carlo Verdone, and Roberto Benigni.
The Screenplay Room In this room you’ll discover the process of translating words into scenes as you view the screenwriting excerpts, storyboards and film sequences on display – including Pupi Avati’s I cavalieri che fecero l'impresa, and Terry Gilliam’s The Adventures of Baron Münchausen. Learn how passages from a written text become the dialogue of a film.
The Sound Room Here you will learn how essential sound is to highlighting a film’s narrative. Around the hall are listening stations where you can gain an understanding of sound layering by hearing individual audio tracks: dialogues, noises and scores. All the audio files are from films processed in the laboratory of the Cine-phonic department in Cinecittà.
The Costume Room The dream of making virtual costumes – by combining garments, accessories and wigs from some of the most important films shot in Cinecittà – comes true in this room. The touch-screen tables enable you to discover costumes designed by great masters and created in legendary fashion houses and specialized costume shops.
The Fiction Room Here you will discover how any work of cinematic fiction is created: the initial special effects, the big set building in Cinecittà, the transformation of an actor’s face through make-up.
Cinecittà’s Numbers In this last section you can reminisce about the Cinecittà story as told through its "numbers," which have been contributing to its legend for 75 years.
The tour ends with access to a surprise set that can be touched and explored!
